What I loved about Kotor

I spent three weeks in Kotor, Montenegro (tip: stay in Dobrota), as the first part of a nearly three-month journey around the Balkans, and I count that time as one of my most wonderful travel experiences. I couldn’t pick my jaw up off the ground the entire time! Kotor Bay has to be one of the most stunning places on planet Earth, and the charming medieval walled city of Kotor is its jewel.

Montenegro packs SO much into a tiny country

While the bay is breathtaking, don’t sleep on the rest of this tiny country. I took day trips to the central and northern regions of Kotor, and, Dear Reader, it’s so beautiful it made me cry. The history of Montenegro fascinates, and the food is delicious. I’m jealous of your trip. I can’t wait to return.

Kotor invites you to just chill out

There’s an old joke in Montenegro that reflects the country’s culture: Man is born tired, and he lives to rest. While the women were not so lucky, the idea that life is to be lived and enjoyed at leisure is Montenegro’s siren song. Take a stroll, take a swim, eat, have a glass of wine, do it all again. Make sure to take at least a day on your holiday to do not much of anything at all, because that’s what Kotor is all about. My own hustle culture could learn a thing or two from life on the bay.
