Zagreb

07Jan
Zagreb Cafés often have branded coffee cups, like the one here in Kavana Palinovka, with a painting of a woman with rainbow hair. A water glass is visible on the table, and in the background, yellow walls and patrons are visible

Zagreb Cafés and Café Culture (with Map)

Zagreb’s café culture is one of Europe’s best, rivaling that of Paris and Vienna. This post includes an overview of Zagreb café culture as well as several of my favorite Zagreb cafés from around the city. Use the detailed map on the go and in planning your trip! This post may contain affiliate links, meaning that I get a commission if you take advantage of the offer (thank you!).

Kuhano Vino: Get in the Holiday Spirit with Croatian Mulled Wine

When the weather outside gets frightful, warm up with a cup of Kuhano Vino (Croatian mulled wine). Perfectly spiced, not too heavy, and a cinch to make, this festive wintry treat is sure to make it into your holiday (or, you know, February) rotation.

Museum of Broken Relationships & the Zagreb 80s Museum

Among Zagreb’s many highlights, add museums to your list of must-dos. Two in particular have stood out to me for their poignant combination of humor and mourning: The Museum of Broken Relationships and the 80s Museum.

Travelogue: An Autumn Adventure on the Žičara Sljeme (Zagreb Cable Car)

Welcome to Travelogue, where I post little updates from my adventures on the road. I had a wonderful time riding through the autumn foliage on the Žičara Sljeme (Zagreb Cable Car).

Spring Recipes Roundup: Dishes for a New Season

about-me-image
Welcome to Wonder & Sundry! Travel, Eat, and Live the good life, right here, right now!
It's Maple Weekend in New Hampshire! I visited Windswept Maples and watched them boil maple sap into sweet, sweet maple syrup. And then got to taste some! The farm animals were delightful. A lovely afternoon in the country. Maple Weekend continues through Sunday. 🍁

I'm reading Saving Time, by Jenny Odell and am thinking a lot about how we humans have constructed time. She writes early on in the book about the move to standardized 24-hour time in the 19th century, and I keep flashing back to this oddity in Split, Croatia.

The Pjaca clock tower looks at first glance like any other charming old clock tower gracing a European Old Town. On second glance, you notice that it's a 24-hour clock. The clock face dates back to the 16th century (the bell tower is considerably older, and the gate to which it is adjacent to dates back to the Romans). It now sits over a touristy square, still regulating time.

I have a personal writing project that's really about time, or moments simultaneously stuck in the past and ever-present, and all I keep thinking about is how time is such a funny thing, isn't it?
A quiet afternoon at the Laconia Public Library. I love this old study room; it's become a favorite "spot" during my time in New Hampshire. The stained glass windows look out onto birch trees and the old train station. It feels a bit like stepping back in time.

Do you have favorite spots for concentrating when you need a change of scene?

I've been a bit quiet here on Instagram for the past few weeks. I'm working on updating Wonder & Sundry, and while I'm looking forward to sharing it with you, it's definitely a project! In the meantime, I'm also thinking about what this Instagram space could be.

I'd love to get to know you better. And, since one way to do that is to actually show one's face on this app, I want to work on showing mine a little more. Not the best selfie (you can see the same stained glass in my glasses), and my hair's interesting, but hi! Nice to see you.

How are you this fine Saturday? What are you up to?

More soon.
What are you doing to show yourself some love this Valentine's Day? Champagne? Fancy chocolates? A long bath or a massage? Maybe getting dinner and a movie?

Personally, I'm a fan of dark chocolate and scary movies, a tradition that goes back about 20 years. If you have a favorite horror movie I should add to my list, let me know!

From bubbles and baubles to taking yourself out on a date, check out my post, linked in the usual spot for ideas on how to be your own Valentine!

Ice Castles in New Hampshire's White Mountains is a little bit of magic in winter. Have you been? So delightful! Check out the link in my bio for everything you need to visit!

Happy Friday! What brightened your days this week? Ice Castles in New Hampshire's White Mountains on Wednesday topped my week. Have you ever been? So whimsical!

Otherwise, it was fairly quiet here, especially with the frigid temperatures last weekend. I'm glad we aren't repeating that nonsense.

We took grapefruit to new heights with just about the easiest recipe you'll ever try and discovered the best cafés to work from in Split, Croatia.

Check out these posts and what I'm reading these days in my latest recap post. Link in the usual spot. I'd love to hear what you're looking forward to this weekend.
