Blood oranges and herbs. Image shows four blood orange halves, along with several oranges, a sprig of rosemary, a sprig of thyme, and sprigs of parsley are visible

Roast Pork Tenderloin with Blood Oranges

Roast Pork Tenderloin with Blood Oranges has everything I want in a winter dish—a little bit indulgent, but also bright and flavorful. This dish uses blood oranges as a marinade, in the sauce, and as a garnish. Serve this for an occasion or for a work-from-home weeknight—again, my kind of dish! Honey Lemon Chicken with Herbes de Provence

Honey Lemon Chicken with Herbes de Provence

There’s just enough of a nip in the air to think about turning on the oven. Honey Lemon Chicken with Herbes de Provence still sings of summer (it’s great cold on a picnic) but turns toward autumn. Based on a recipe by Rachel Khoo, this delicious dish could not be simpler to make.

Better Than Meal Kit Chicken

Better Than Meal Kit Chicken

Cook this when you’ve had a long day and just need dinner on the table. This recipe takes its cue from popular meal kits, but it’s so much better. Think of this recipe as a template. The chicken is good on its own, but it’s even better with one of the simple sauces included in the recipe. Pan Seared Steak with Herbed Mustard Butter and Shallots

Pan Seared Steak with Herbed Mustard Butter and Shallots

Pan Seared Steak is delicious, all the more so with a pungent Herbed Mustard Butter and simple pan sauce made with lots of shallots. This dish works as well for a special occasion as it does for a weeknight dinner. Talk about a recipe for your back pocket! Bonus mashed potato recipe for subscribers! Not one? Subscribe today! Cranberry Roasted Chicken with Oranges, perfect for Thanksgiving or a Merry Little Solo Christmas dinner. Image of the dish in a cast-iron frying pan on a white stove.

Cranberry Roasted Chicken with Oranges

Quick enough for a weeknight WFH dinner but pretty enough for a celebration, Cranberry Roasted Chicken with Oranges surprises. Tart and bright, but balanced, this goes great with mashed potatoes. I first made this for my solo Thanksgiving last year. Recipe in post.

Braised Chicken with Mushroom Cream Sauce

Braised Chicken with Mushrooms and Cream

Crisp autumn days call for a slow-cooked dish like Braised Chicken with Mushrooms and Cream. This one-pan dish may not win any beauty contests, but it will have you licking your plate.

Sundry Wonders: Return of the Waves

about-me-image
Welcome to Wonder & Sundry! Travel, Eat, and Live the good life, right here, right now!
A Season on Lake Winnisquam, New Hampshire. Most days, I walked with my dog down to a public landing and took a few minutes of peace. A season of ice and snow and the return of the waves.

This morning, gray though it was, brought a moment of celebration. The ice has melted, and the waves have returned.

After a season of travel, I have just had a season of stillness. I watched Lake Winnisquam begin to freeze in December, and Ollie and I walked down there most days. There's something to be said for travel photos, but I think that there's something thrilling, too, in watching the same spot change over the course of a season.

With the waves comes a feeling that it's time to move again. I'm not exactly sure where Ollie and I are headed next, but if I'm able to sit in stillness just a few moments longer, I know it will come to me.

I wrote a bit more about this in a spontaneous Sundry Wonders post. Link in the usual spot.
A few snaps of the animals from Saturday's trip to Windswept Maples for Maple Weekend. The little itty bitty babies are so cute, and that bull was tired of people like me snapping photos of him.
It's Maple Weekend in New Hampshire! I visited Windswept Maples and watched them boil maple sap into sweet, sweet maple syrup. And then got to taste some! The farm animals were delightful. A lovely afternoon in the country. Maple Weekend continues through Sunday. 🍁

I'm reading Saving Time, by Jenny Odell and am thinking a lot about how we humans have constructed time. She writes early on in the book about the move to standardized 24-hour time in the 19th century, and I keep flashing back to this oddity in Split, Croatia.

The Pjaca clock tower looks at first glance like any other charming old clock tower gracing a European Old Town. On second glance, you notice that it's a 24-hour clock. The clock face dates back to the 16th century (the bell tower is considerably older, and the gate to which it is adjacent to dates back to the Romans). It now sits over a touristy square, still regulating time.

I have a personal writing project that's really about time, or moments simultaneously stuck in the past and ever-present, and all I keep thinking about is how time is such a funny thing, isn't it?
A quiet afternoon at the Laconia Public Library. I love this old study room; it's become a favorite "spot" during my time in New Hampshire. The stained glass windows look out onto birch trees and the old train station. It feels a bit like stepping back in time.

Do you have favorite spots for concentrating when you need a change of scene?

I've been a bit quiet here on Instagram for the past few weeks. I'm working on updating Wonder & Sundry, and while I'm looking forward to sharing it with you, it's definitely a project! In the meantime, I'm also thinking about what this Instagram space could be.

I'd love to get to know you better. And, since one way to do that is to actually show one's face on this app, I want to work on showing mine a little more. Not the best selfie (you can see the same stained glass in my glasses), and my hair's interesting, but hi! Nice to see you.

How are you this fine Saturday? What are you up to?

More soon.
