Mini Dark Chocolate Cake: Just Enough of a Good Thing

Gâteau au Chocolat Fondant de Nathalie is an exquisite, melt-in-your-mouth dark chocolate cake that wows everyone who tastes it. It’s such a rich cake, however, that baking a full recipe is just too much. Enter the Mini Gâteau au Chocolat Fondant de Nathalie, a twenty percent recipe that incorporates a tasty addition from one of the many bakers who wrote about this lovely cake back in the early food-blog era. Spiced Lemon-Lime Sorbet

Spiced Lemon-Lime Sorbet Beats the Heat

Beat the heat with this tart and spicy sorbet, a twist on a traditional lemon sorbet. A simple trick gets it oh-so-smooth without the beaten egg white often called for in lemon sorbets. Bring out the ginger and cardamom in the syrup with an overnight rest in the fridge. Use any leftover syrup as a mixer! You’ll be making Spiced Lemon-Lime Sorbet on repeat this summer! Spiced Apple Sorbet with Pie Crust Cookies

Spiced Apple Sorbet

Spiced Apple Sorbet packs all of the flavor of apple pie into a refreshing palate cleanser or light dessert. Homemade applesauce creates a perfect texture, and spiced simple syrup brings the flavor (you might find yourself making it for other uses). You can find the optional Pie Crust Cookie recipe in the Wonder & Sundry Recipe Box (subscribe below for access).

Apple Crisp

I Organized My Spices and Made Apple Crisp

Is there anything better than homemade apple crisp on an autumn evening? Maybe the joy that comes with an organized spice rack? I’ve been on an organization kick of late, and to celebrate a simple solution to my spice organization woes, I baked up an apple crisp. Illustrated recipe included.

Sundry Wonders: Return of the Waves

about-me-image
Welcome to Wonder & Sundry! Travel, Eat, and Live the good life, right here, right now!
A Season on Lake Winnisquam, New Hampshire. Most days, I walked with my dog down to a public landing and took a few minutes of peace. A season of ice and snow and the return of the waves.

This morning, gray though it was, brought a moment of celebration. The ice has melted, and the waves have returned.

After a season of travel, I have just had a season of stillness. I watched Lake Winnisquam begin to freeze in December, and Ollie and I walked down there most days. There's something to be said for travel photos, but I think that there's something thrilling, too, in watching the same spot change over the course of a season.

With the waves comes a feeling that it's time to move again. I'm not exactly sure where Ollie and I are headed next, but if I'm able to sit in stillness just a few moments longer, I know it will come to me.

I wrote a bit more about this in a spontaneous Sundry Wonders post. Link in the usual spot.
A few snaps of the animals from Saturday's trip to Windswept Maples for Maple Weekend. The little itty bitty babies are so cute, and that bull was tired of people like me snapping photos of him.
It's Maple Weekend in New Hampshire! I visited Windswept Maples and watched them boil maple sap into sweet, sweet maple syrup. And then got to taste some! The farm animals were delightful. A lovely afternoon in the country. Maple Weekend continues through Sunday. 🍁

I'm reading Saving Time, by Jenny Odell and am thinking a lot about how we humans have constructed time. She writes early on in the book about the move to standardized 24-hour time in the 19th century, and I keep flashing back to this oddity in Split, Croatia.

The Pjaca clock tower looks at first glance like any other charming old clock tower gracing a European Old Town. On second glance, you notice that it's a 24-hour clock. The clock face dates back to the 16th century (the bell tower is considerably older, and the gate to which it is adjacent to dates back to the Romans). It now sits over a touristy square, still regulating time.

I have a personal writing project that's really about time, or moments simultaneously stuck in the past and ever-present, and all I keep thinking about is how time is such a funny thing, isn't it?
A quiet afternoon at the Laconia Public Library. I love this old study room; it's become a favorite "spot" during my time in New Hampshire. The stained glass windows look out onto birch trees and the old train station. It feels a bit like stepping back in time.

Do you have favorite spots for concentrating when you need a change of scene?

I've been a bit quiet here on Instagram for the past few weeks. I'm working on updating Wonder & Sundry, and while I'm looking forward to sharing it with you, it's definitely a project! In the meantime, I'm also thinking about what this Instagram space could be.

I'd love to get to know you better. And, since one way to do that is to actually show one's face on this app, I want to work on showing mine a little more. Not the best selfie (you can see the same stained glass in my glasses), and my hair's interesting, but hi! Nice to see you.

How are you this fine Saturday? What are you up to?

More soon.
