Lotrščak Tower, looking up at the front of the building, with 6 xs visible at the top, on the sides and then above the top two windows. This building served as a medieval torture chamber and is a haunted Zagreb site.

Lotrščak Tower

Hear cannon fire every afternoon!

Absolutely Wonderful

Why You'll Love It

The first thing you’ll see riding up the funicular to Grič is Lotrščak Tower, which translates to “bell of the theieves.” In medieval times, the bells told residents that the gates were about to close for the evening. It had also been a prison and torture chamber.
You might hear Lotrščak Tower, too, for every day at noon the cannon fires, commemorating an accidental warding off of attackers. It’s loud!

Know Before You Go

Even with all of the construction happening in Zagreb after the earthquake, that cannon can still startle you (it scared the living daylights out of me). If you hear (or feel) it, look around. Chances are the locals haven’t even glanced up from their phones. You’re fine.
