Why You'll Love It

Klis, perched high above Split, has protected the coast from invaders since the 2nd century BCE. Popularized by Game of Thrones as Meereen, tourism at Klis fortress has exploded, but, go on the right day at the right time of year, and you might have the place mostly to yourself. It’s well preserved, and you can have the run of it (be careful—there’s not a lot of protection for visitors). The small museum shares the history of the fortress (even the Mongols couldn’t capture it), and you can also enter the chapel, which repurposed a mosque, which had replaced a church.
