Why You'll Love It
Since 1930, Emporio Zunino, just outside of Mercado Central, has dished up delicious empanadas. Founded by Italian brothers (Zunino also makes cheeses and pasta), this very old-school establishment is not only filling but fun.
Bring your best Spanish, and keep the pace. Take your ticket, and then head to the counter and wait for your order.
Eat standing up, rubbing shoulders with locals, and take whatever you have left (and you will have leftovers; the empanadas are ginormous) with you. I recommend getting the queso and the traditional meat empanada. The meat filling is unique, made with onions, eggs, and olives—trust me, it’s delicious.
There are (slightly) better empanadas to be had in Santiago, but, when combined with the experience, this is my favorite spot.
Know Before You Go
While they accept credit cards, I’d use cash here. If there’s issues with the card machine, you’ll just annoy the people behind you
