Veli Varoš

There’s no better place in Split to get deliciously lost

Absolutely Wonderful

Why You'll Love It

Veli Varoš was where the fishing and farmhand communities lived, and it gives you an idea of what life was like in Split centuries ago. The winding streets of Veli Varoš in the shadow of Marjan Hill, with houses built practically on top of each other, and little medieval churches hiding in plain sight, gave me some of my favorite memories of my month in Split.

Follow your interest here, there’s almost always something interesting to see. This guide has some of my favorite finds from my strolls through this delight of a neighborhood, and I’d love to hear yours.

Varoš is actually quite large (it includes Marjan Hill, which I separated out for the purposes of this guide), and further down the Riva, you can escape the city bustle in Sustipan park, which offers great sea views.

The Details

How To Get There

If you walk from Grad toward Marjan Hill, you’ll find the cutest part of Veli Varoš. Just pick an interesting side street and start wandering.

Solo Female Travel

This is where Split’s safety really lets you just get deliciously lost without a care in the world. Stop and notice what interests you and enjoy the quiet of your footsteps.

Know Before You Go

While the streets are impossibly narrow, traffic is allowed here, so take care of passing cars and scooters. It’s quieter in the mornings.
