Upper Town

Visit Old Zagreb

Absolutely Wonderful

The Stone Arch in Zagreb, visible from the side. Photo emphasizes the mace at the top of the tower, which was meant to deter witches. The dragon statue is visible in the left foreground, and a shop building next to the stone gate is visible as well.

Why You'll Love It

Modern Zagreb is the union of two medieval cities, Gradec up on the hill, and Kaptol, the area around the Cathedral. St Mark’s Square was the religious center of Gradec, and the Cathedral was Kaptol’s.

You’d be forgiven for assuming that “Upper Town” referred to the area on top of the hill (I did for longer than I care to admit), but Upper Town is these two areas, and, indeed any of the main area above Ilica, Zagreb’s main street (I have separated out the immediate center for this guide).

Upper Town holds many of Zagreb’s unique treasures, from the twisty streets of old Gradec and the adorable little funicular, to the Dolac Market and the majestic Cathedral in Kaptol.

The Details

How To Get There

Take the tram to Ban Jelačić Square and stay on that side of Ilica

Solo Female Travel

You’ll have a lovely wander through Old Zagreb in Upper Town. Indeed, I think that the twisty streets and view points invite quiet reflection. Zagreb is a very safe city, so just use common sense, and you’ll have a wonderful time!

Know Before You Go

Upper Town is darling, but much of that glorious architecture sustained heavy damage in the 2020 earthquake. Expect construction, and, if there is something you have your heart set on seeing, double check to confirm that you’ll be able to see it.
